It’s been a busy few weeks on the playing front for Salthill Devon football club. The U13 As overcame a resolute Kiltullagh FC by 2-1 to climb to the top of the table, albeit with the chasing teams having games in hand. Matthew Thompson scored with a stunning free-kick while Milo O Malley bagged the winner with a superb finish to delight the travelling Devon supporters. This team, like many teams in the club, is coached by current and former players with experience of playing at the highest level both locally and nationally with Salthill Devon and Galway Utd and is evidence of the community spirit within the club which is fostered from an early age.
The Junior Premier League team had a hard fought victory over champions St Bernards courtesy of a 2-1 victory in Drom on Friday night. Marek Kyricki’s team will be hoping that this win can transform their fortunes after endearing a luckless period prior to Christmas. Their next game is at home to Galway Hibs tonight (Friday) at 7:30pm.
With the U12 As not playing due to many of the players’ involvement with the Galway & District League representative team the other U12 teams were in action in their respective cup competitions. Martin Ridge’s U11 As, playing as the U12 Bs recorded a morale boosting 1-0 victory over Maree/Oranmore in a hotly contested encounter in Drom. The Division 2 team overcame Galway Hibs by 5-1 while the Division 3 team put in a gallant performance before going down to a fine Mervue Utd side.
The U16 Bs recorded a fantastic 5-3 away win to Corrib Celtic in Annaghdown the week before last. Two goals from Ali Thuam with one apiece from Kallum Tobin, Mark Diskin and Lewis Ferrer ensured the win for the Seagulls which was all the more impressive as they were 3-1 down at half-time.
Despite goalkeeper Evan Lyons Kelly making numerous fine saves the same team eventually went down in their Galway Cup tie to Merlin FC by 3-0 on a foggy day in Drom last weekend.
The U15 Division 1 team maintained their unbeaten record in the league thanks to goals from Kallum Tobin, Ali Thuam and a winning strike from Emil Mocarko to give them a merited 3-2 victory over Kinvara. The win sees Pat Lawless’s team join Kiltullagh FC at the top of the table in what promises to be an exciting finish to the season for the top two.
The U14 Girls defeated Corrib Rangers while the U12 girls progressed to the semi-finals of the Galway Cup with a 2-0 win over Colga FC in a close encounter. Goal scoring machine Emily Fitzgerald opened the scoring with a fine left foot strike before Caoimhe Nic Aodha secured the win after a superb pass from Kate Thompson.
The U12B Girls performed excellently before going losing 1-0 to a late Cregmore goal.
On the academy front Drom was the place to be last Friday night as the U8 boys welcomed Mervue Utd and Galway Hibs while the U10 and U8 girls hosted Mervue Utd and Barna Utd. The boys and girls performed excellently under lights and the large crowds were treated to fine individual and team performances. Salthill Devon provides coaching for juveniles from the age of 3 in a controlled and learning environment with training continuing tomorrow (Saturday) morning and every Saturday morning from 9:30am.
