Salthill Devon toasting a month of international call ups
February is turning out to be a great month for Salthill Devon Football as a number of existing and ex- Devon players have been named in the latest underage Republic of Ireland squads announced by the FAI.
The former Devon pair of Colm Horgan and Antaine O’Laoi, symptoms now plying their trades in the League of Ireland with Galway United have been called up. Colm has been called up to Noel King’s Ireland U21 home based squad who are scheduled to play the Ireland Amateur team at the AUL next week whilst Antaine has been called up to the Republic of Ireland U18 for double header friendly against Wales at the end of the month.
Joining Antaine on the U18 squad is his brother Finian and Shane Hulgraine currently playing with Salthill Devon League of Ireland U19’s.
Also Salthill Devon’s Heather Payne was called up to the Republic of Irelands squad for the UEFA WU16 Development Tournament in Dublin which the Irish girls meeting Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic over 4 days. The first fixture was against the Czechs Friday 20th Feb with the Irish girls going losing by 2 – 0. Ireland came close though before half-time when Heather broke through on goal but her shot was comfortably saved by the Czech. Heather was also called up in January along with other Devon girls Aoife Lynagh, Meghen Hengerer, and Sadhbh Doyle to the Republic of Ireland U15 play the Bob Docherty Tournament in Scotland in April.
It’s turning out to be a quite a year for Salthill Devon, as it brings the total number of current and past Devon players to be called up to Irish squads in 2015 to 8 proving that the coaching up in Devon is working by giving these players a great opportunity to play for their country
