There was more good news for girls’soccer in Galway this week with the announcement that four Salthill Devon girls have been picked for the Irish Under 15 squad to play the Bob Docherty Tournament in Scotland in April. Heather Payne, Sadhbh Doyle, Aoife Lynagh and Meghen Hengerer have all been selected. Heather Payne was also selected for the Under 16 squad and played a key role against Northern Ireland this week providing the assist for the winning goal.

Sadhbh, Aoife & Meghen were part of the core squad who won the Gaynor Cup U14
with Galway beating Dublin in the final in 2014. All of the players have come through the
Salthill Devon Girls Academy part of the squad who narrowly lost the U12 national final against Shelbourne FC in 2011. Sadhbh Doyle was the winning player of the National Tournament that year.
Both Meghen & Aoife are underage again next year so selection this year highlights their talent. Lilly Hengerer, Meghen’s twin sister also a Salthill Devon player, narrowly missed out on selection but is underage again next year.
Having four girls from one west of Ireland club part of a national squad of 18 is phenomenal and Salthill Devon are very proud of the Girls. We’ll get a chance to see them in Drom early March when the Irish team play a Connacht select U16 in a friendly.
