What is Billy's Fish or Steak?

A question many a man has asked and an occasion that many a woman has questioned the sanity of.

Billy Fitzgerald was a man that would have been regarded as 'stalwart' in any organisation. Sadly he was taken away from us at a young age some years ago but by that time he had established himself as a legend in Salthill Devon. To say that he was loved greatly is a massive understatement and somehow does not do justice to his memory.

I think it is important that the gathering tonight should be reminded of how the Fish or Steak night became what it is today. Modest beginnings indeed - the whole show started as a committee ‘piss up’ at Christmas. Billy decided that the committee should give it a bit of a lash for the festive season and with that in mind he proceeded to collect £2 per head per week starting in late August. The weekly contribution shows just how long ago it was. After a few years of the ‘piss up’ format - which was deemed very appropriate by the participants, Billy decided that a move up-market was called for.

Accordingly a meal was organised with the first such function being attended by ten people in the back bar in the Olso Hotel. The new format went down a treat. A couple of years later one committee member inquired, some time approaching the event, if a menu would be available beforehand - to which a horrified and indignant 'Fitzy' retorted "menu me arse, you can have either fish or steak. A terrible beauty was born
