Under 14 League: Knocknacarra 0 - 6 Salthill Devon

Knocknacarra 0 - 6 Salthill Devon

Almost a month has passed without competitive action for Devon and this left the sour after taste of the SFAI last 16 defeat linger and the only way to exercise this demon is to get back out on the pitch and rectify by playing some good honest football.

With the bulk of the squad regularly involved with the district league select side and emerging talent this has led to more injuries that one would have expected at this crucial time of the season. This gave rare starting opportunities to Niall Murray, Eric Ohlstrom, Colin Hanbury and Aaron Murtagh respectively. One shining light saw the return of Sean Lally to competitive action for the first time since September 2009.

Devon started well and began to dominate possession without really carving out a clear opportunity, for want of a better description, they huffed and puffed but did not manage to breakdown the opposition rearguard. Dillon Murphy was lively in attack and the right side of Eric Ohlstrom and Colin Hanbury was getting a lot of possession in the early stages. Aaron Kane, moved to centre back due to the injury of Shane Garvey, gave his most commanding performance of the season and in Daniel Agger like fashion managed to bring the ball from defence on a number of occasions.

The opening goal came in the last 4 minutes of the first half, at this point, Ben Murphy and Eric Ohlstrom had switched wings and the former was causing a lot of damage down the right flank, some good inter play between Murphy, Hanbury, Byrne and finally Dillon Murphy saw an excellently whipped ball into the near post and the on rushing Aaron Murtagh arrived to expertly finish with a head to the top corner of the net, a superbly executed finish.

Devon made it 2-0 from the re-start with the busy Ben Murphy using his silken skills to get in behind the Knocknacarra rearguard and his finish struck a defender to make it 2-0.

Ten minutes into the second half saw the long awaited return of Sean Lally who replaced Ben Murphy and Shane Connaughton replaced Aaron Murtagh, small tactical changes saw Alex Byrne move into attack, Sean Lally move to right wing and Shane Connaughton to centre midfield. Connaughton along with Niall Murray pulled the strings in midfield and this period of the game saw Devon play their best football in keeping possession for long periods of the game, Alex Byrne made it 3-0 with a header from a cross and he shortly made it 4-0 with a sweet strike from the edge of the box. Shane Connaughton made it 5-0 after a corner kick was half cleared and a sixth goal was added after an excellent in swinger corner from captain for the day Diarmuid Fadden saw Alex Byrne almost connect along with Ohlstrom and a defender in the middle, the goal was credited to Alex Byrne who scored a hat trick against his former team mates. Niall Murray can be proud of his second half performance, Garbhann Malone and Aaron Kane were dominant at the back and they were ably assisted by Chris Healy in goals accompanied by full backs Diarmuid Fadden and Colin Hanbury.

The games are coming thick and fast at this stage of the season and the under 14s are back in action on Friday evening in Drom in a crucial Connaught Cup match versus Oranmore at 6.30pm in Drom.
