Under 11s bow out of Irish Cup

Salthill Devon 0 - 1 Newbridge Town

Salthill Devon’s U-11 team bowed out of the Menton Seery Irish Cup after losing at home to Newbridge Town FC from Kildare. The game was finely balanced throughout between two strong sides. The tie was scoreless heading into the fifth minute of injury time at the end of the game when the visitors struck for the match winner. Amazingly, the referee allowed an additional ten minutes of play but, despite much endeavour, the hosts were unable to produce an equaliser.

On a momentous day for the club, with the senior team lining out in League of Ireland football for the first time later that evening, the squad were keen to provide the perfect start to the day. Once again, Drom was immaculate and with no wind or rain, the scene was set perfectly for the players.

Despite the perfect playing conditions, both teams found it difficult to play fluid football, however, the intensity and commitment of the players was clearly evident. There were many corners for both teams that caused anxious moments for the defences, however, both held firm until halftime. The second half was more of the same with the middle third of the field proving very competitive.

With the game petering towards full time Adam Murphy, for once, managed to free himself from the visitor’s dominant centre half and latch onto a long ball over the top. With the goalkeeper advancing he managed to flick the ball over him but the centre half recovered superbly to clear the danger. Within minutes Newbridge struck the winner when a corner was only partially cleared and a Newbridge player struck a fierce shot on target from just outside the box. The ball took a slight deflection and although goalkeeper James Hill was heading the wrong way he managed to adjust himself and get a hand to the ball, however, the pace on the shot took it past his despairing dive and the ball found its way into the back of the net.

The game seemed over at this stage but Salthill fought on valiantly until the very end and put the visitors under extreme pressure. However, they were restricted to long range efforts that were excellently dealt with by the impressive goalkeeper. The final whistle was greeted by wild celebrations by the visitors while the hosts were devastated.

The whole team showed great commitment throughout, while best on the day were the ever dependable Dessie Conneely, Bronson Kelly, who worked tirelessly throughout and caused problems for the opposition on the right hand side, while Adam Fitzgerald was their star performer as he tackled courageously and was instrumental in setting up many attacks with his pinpoint passing.

Afterwards, both sets of teams and supporters were treated to refreshments in the clubhouse. The management team would like to commend the parents who worked tirelessly during this time to be as hospitable as they possibly could be. This was not lost on the travelling team who were very appreciative. Salthill would like to wish Newbridge Town the very best of luck as they continue on their travels with an away assignment to Mullingar Athletic in the last sixteen, while Devon look forward to the Power Cup final in Terryland Park against the winners of Colga and Renmore.
