Salthill Devon A U11 Girls reach Irish Cup Quarter finals Manualla 2 - 1 Salthill Devon 5 weeks ago the SDFC Girls U11 team were formed, in the short window of time they won the Galway cup Tournament, tend subsequently went to Connacht (Castlebar) and qualified for the Irish Cup over the weekend. The Irish cup tournament was held in the AUL sports complex , Dublin. It consisted of the top 16 U11 teams in the country. First objective was to qualify from the group phase. SDFC were pooled with Fanad Utd, Bree Utd & Kilmallock FC. SDFC 0 Fanad Utd 0 Player of the Match Louise creaven (Goalkeeper) who made some terrific saves to keep SDFC level. In what was a hard fought contest. SDFC never lost their shape and we have some good goal chances stopped By solid defending by Fanad. Bree Utd 0 SDFC 1 A crucial game in attempting to qualify for the last 8. Besides Louise Creaven once again performing excellent between the posts up stepped Aideen Naughton with the positional sense of any adult player to slot home a winner Kilmallock 0 SDFC 0 A win or Draw to Qualify for the Quarter Final. Killmallock were a well drilled side and pressured Devon all over the park. Our backline of Sorcha Ni Bhraonain, Clodagh O'Donnell and Aisling Lawless held well. Meanwhile in Midfield Carmel Heery Tackled like a pro and won every 50-50 ball, Sinead Hefferenan was the "Roy keane" engine in midfield. "WonderGoalie" Louise Creaven fielded a high lob heading for the back of the net that had all the supporters hearts stop. With 5 pts on the table SDFC qualified for the quarter final having played unbeaten from the group phase. Next up Manulla FC in the Quarter final and their pair of sharp shooters up front who had already tallied 7 goals in the group phase. An unfortunate blow to SDFCs chances was the injury to Sinead Heffernan during warm up as she dislocated her finger. The team & Coaches wish her a speedy recovery. Pen ready for cast signing ! Manualla pressed Devon from the First 10 seconds , the eventual goal came after 5 mins…far from heads going down Sadhbh Howlin, Becky Ni Eallaithe and Melissa McGreen started to pass the ball around like pros, this combination coupled with the no holds barred tackling in defense saw Aideen Naughton (aka Gary Liniker) once again be in the right place to slot home an equaliser. Game on …from that moment on both teams had chances at either end as it was end to end drama. 10 Seconds on the clock sadly for Devon Manualla scored a wonder goal that even Shay Given wouldn't have stopped. Manualla 2 - SDFC 1…. Well done to the SDFC team 13 games later definitely a proven squad , well done to Louise Creaven, Sorcha Ni Bhraonain, Clodagh O'Donnell, Aisling Lawless, Aideen Naughton, Becky Ni Eallaithe, Mellissa McGreen, Carmel Heery, Sinead Heffernan & Sadhbh Howlin who made us proud. The good news is that half this squad will be U11 again next year.
