Salthill Devon U-14's win league opener Salthill Devon 6 - 1 Tuam CelticDevon opened their league campaign with a home tie to Tuam Celtic. This was always going to be a difficult game as Tuam Celtic were the only team to defeat Devon in last season's league campaign. This was the ideal motivator for the lads as no room for complacency could be tolerated. Conor Shaugnessy was captain for the day after his brace of goals sealed victory for the league campaign although Joe Gaughan & Chris Healy were very close in the running. Devon started the game at a good pace with Ben Murphy opened the scoring after some neat work by Eamonn Brannigan in attack. Devon took the foot off the gas and allowed Tuam Celtic back into the game, Tuam were winning the midfield battles early on and they have a serious attacking threat with pace & strength combined. A needless freekick given away by Aaron Kane allowed a lofty ball in the Devon box which failed to be cleared, the resulting strike evened up the matters 1-1. Tuam Celtic almost made it 2-1 after they broke through the Devon rearguard only for debutant Alex Byrne to make a superb interception and keep the scoreline on a parity. Shane Garvey picked up a knock and was replaced by Garbhann Malone who slotted into centre half and Aaron Kane moved to right back. 1-1 at the interval. Devon looked for more urgency and crisper tackling and movement, and this paid dividends early into the 2nd half with the energistic Eoghan Stenson making it 2-1. Indeed he was unlcuky not to make it 3-1 with Devon's best move of the game involving some great work by A Kane down the right flank releasing Shane Connaughton who precise move to Stenson should have madie it 3-1 only to see the effort just go over the bar. Shane Connaughton made it 3-1 shortly afterwards. Tuam had held their own for the first 45 mins and will compete and at the top end of this league. Eric Ohlstrom & Colin Hanbury replaced Shane Connaughton & Eamonn Brannigan respectively. Further goals in the final minutes from Joe Gaughan, Ben Murphy sealed victory but the scoreline but it was not a fair reflection of the game. Man of the Match for Devon was left midfielder, Ben Murphy who scored 2 and claim an assist on his debut. Devon play Galway Hibs at 18.45 this thursday in Drom.
