The Salthill Devon senior team is currently playing League of Ireland Football in the Airtricity First Division. In 2008, the club played its first season in the newly formed League of Ireland third tier The A Championship, meaning that they had an opportunity to gain promotion to the League of Ireland First Division for the first time. After topping their group in 2009 they qualified they gained that promotion into the League of Ireland First Division.
The club was always seen as key contributor in providing youth in the West with an opportunity to begin their careers and give them a solid foundation in football and playing League of Ireland further provides greater opportunities to the younger members of the club.
Salthill Devon is also one of 12 clubs competing in the Elite Division of the FAI’s new Under 19 national league. The U19 league is an important stepping stone and gives players the opportunity to play in the league of Ireland.
Salthill Devon Airtricity League 1st Division Management Team
Paul "Ski" McGee is the current manager of the Airtricity First Division Team. Paul started his career with Sligo Rovers making his debut at 16 years of age in November 1970. While at Finn Harps he won the FAI Cup in 1974. After Finn Harps Paul re-joined Sligo Rovers and won the League of Ireland Championship in 1977. After the success in the League of Ireland Paul moved cross the water to Queen Park Rangers. In his international career, he was was capped 16 times at senior level scoring 4 goals.
In 1984 Paul signed for Shamrock Rovers and scored twice on his debut. In total Paul played 15 times for the Hoops, including twice in the European Cup, scoring 5 goals. While at Galway United he scored in the UEFA Cup and is currently Galway United's all time top goalscorer in the League of Ireland. He was the club's player-manager during the 1989-90 season.
Paul took charge of Salthill Devon in May 2011 and has strong links to the club having played for them after his successful League of Ireland career. He currently holds a UEFA A badge.
Mike Quirke is a UEFA license coach and brings a wealth of playing experience to the table. He played for Galway United for over ten seasons in the League of Ireland and joined Emlyn Long to coach the successfull under 21 squad 4 years ago.
In 2010 their squad gained promotion to the League of Ireland 1st Division by winning their A Championship group before losting out to a laast minute Shamrock Rovers goal in the A Championship Final.
Mike has the ability to get the best out of all of his players whether they are veterans or youngsters making their way in the game. He demands commitment, but also his creative approach allows the players to express themselves and feel comfortable and confident.
