A new look U-14 squad comes together for their season opener on Friday. 4 new additions will provide competition for places, however, the immediate task will be enabling the team to gel together and recreate the Esprit des Corps that was abundantly evident last term. For all those starved of entertaining football, the only place to be this evening at 7pm is Drom

U11 Danone Nations Cup

Salthill Devon Under 11s very nearly put the icing on the cake over the weekend when they reached the national final of the Danone Cup. Unfortunately it was not to be as they went down 1-0 to Villa FC from Waterford at the last hurdle.

They qualified for the finals a few weeks ago after winning the North Western region and carried on the winning ways by beating Portlaoise 2-0 in the first Game. Next up was Woodlawn from North Dublin and again the Devon Boys ran out 2-0 winners. Confidence was sky high at this stage and it needed to be because next up was the current Irish Cup holders Cherry Orchard. This didn't phase the lads and again with an absolute powerful performance they won 2-0.

We would like to thank all the parents that made the trip to Dublin and for working with us all season getting the Lads to Training and Matches.

Youth Update

Paraic Fadden's U17 side eased into the next round of the FAI U17 Cup with a comfortable 6-2 win over Castlebar Celtic on Sunday last. In-form all over the pitch, it was a pleasing day out for the team and management - anyone who has travelled to Castlebar will understand that there are no easy wins there and Paraic will be particularly pleased with the manner in which his team responded when begged back to one all - they really blitzed Celtic - leading 5-1 at the break. It's FAI U17 Cup action next for this side, with a tricky assignment against Real Tubber in Drom on Sunday next with a 2pm kick off.

An out of sorts Under 16 side were forced to work harder than expected before they dispatched Claremorris on Saturday in the SFAI U16 Cup - winning six nil in the end, they were pushed all the way before superior fitness and class shone through in the last quarter.

Tom Horgan's U14's were shocked when they fell to a fine Mervue side in the Connacht Cup - losing 2-1 in extra time in Mervue on Saturday.

The Coerver Coaching program is really catching on and this weekend was a really busy one for the teams who had additional training from Austin Speight. The challenge provided by Austin and the whole coaching philosophy is a real boost - especially at the Nipper Academy level.

Tom Power's Under 20 side had a free weekend and earned a fine 3-0 win over local rivals Galway Utd on Tuesday evening - Derry City will visit Drom on Saturday next in what promises to be a really exciting tie.

A Championship – Salthill Devon v Derry City @ 4pm

Salthill Devon will play Derry City in Drom on Saturday at 4pm in the A Championship. The lads will be keen to revenge a 4 nil defeat in the Brandywell last weekend. So pleaes come to Drom and support the team.

Salthill Devon will play two All-Ireland semi-finals this Sunday the 31st August

At 2.30PM in Drom they will take on Drogheda United in the Intermediate Cup and later the same evening the U16 squad will take on Lifford United from Ennis in the WFAI U16 semi-final in Terryland Park with a 6.30PM kick off.

The Intermediate team will include no less than 8 of Stephen Lallys Galway Ladies UEFA squad and will quietly fancy their chances.Led by Meabh De Burca and with fellow internationals a plenty with Julie-Ann Russell , Lucy Hannon ,Anna McCormack Emer Flatley , Brenda Flannery and Aine Hannon they should fear no one.

They can also count on the impressive right full Caroline Carter, and possibly one of their best players this season and surely a must for Noel Kings senior international squad sometime soon is Ruth Fahy. Experience is added by strikers Anna McGrath & Richael O’Brien, defender Imelda Gordon and keeper Niki Cullina. A big boost for Salthill Devon is that Ann Marie McDonough is fit and available for selection and will surely cause the Drogheda defenders some anxious moments. Daga Zolty Jenny O’Mahony and Maevellen Moyles add depth to an impressive squad.

The U16’s after a fantastic 3—2 win over old rivals Stella Maris in the previous round can look forward with confidence against a highly fancied and experienced Lifford team from Ennis. Salthill’s inspirational Captain Becky Walsh picked up an injury whilst captaining the Irish U17 team to second place in a prestigious tournament in Poland last week and remains doubtful. Walsh would be a huge loss but the Seasiders can look forward to the return of Lauren Ashmore and Ina Butler who were both missing in the previous round. Undoubtedly the aces in the home camp are in attack with Dora Gorman , Shaunagh Jackson and Tara Lawless who can all be brilliant on their day. In defence Caoimhe McBrien is well protected by the ever reliable Jenny Heggerty and full backs Emma Carter and Ciara Holland. Tessa Mullins will anchor the mid field and following her call up to the Galway squad for Bosnia will be brimming with confidence. Laura Carroll will bring skill and finesse and the squad is well supported by young players Grace O’Donnell, Ciara Payton , Laura Parker , Stephanie Wynne and Aoife Molloy.

Kick off again is 6.30PM in Terryland Park on Sunday

    Weekend Summary

Salthill teams had mixed fortunes over the w./e, with all of the Schoolboys side in action in their Irish Cup competitions posting victories - Irish Cup progress then for U11, U13 and U15 sides.

On the down side, our U21 team bowed out of the Eircom U21 league, their 1-0 loss to Castlebar Celtic,s aw the Mayo team progress to the knockout stages at our expense. Despite some fine form of late, a slow start saw this fine young team, who we will recall are the defending champions needing to win their last game 2-0 and they fell short at the last hurdle. Emlyn Long and Mike Quirke can take great pride in their work over the last two seasons.

Evidence of this work was on hand on Sunday morning last when seven of the U21's appeared for the Premier League team vs. Hibs - in an end to end contest, Hibs prevailed 3-2, but only after Keith O'Shaughnessy missed a late penalty that would have tied up the game.

Pete Kelly's charges were comprehensively defeated in Oughterard on Sunday in the Third Division, while Kenny Gavin's Division 4 legends side recorded another impressive victory 4-3 vs.Mannions - goals from Eoin O'Callaghan, Des Lynsa, Philip Cox and Kieran O'Sullivan keep their season moving nicely.

Both U18 side's won on Sunday, with the U18B side - which is made up of mostly U17 players coming together nicely under the tutelage of Steve Clark.

The Nippers Academy, under the watchful eye of John Brennan see's training every Saturday morning from 9.30 to 12.00 at Drom. The U11 Development league is also well underway, so watch this space for more on that in the coming weeks.

Niamh Fahey wins Sports Star of Week

Niamh Fahey has won the Sports Star of the Week award in the Independent for her tremendous display last Sunday as the Galway District League Womens team captured the Irish Senior Cup with a 1-0 victory over much fancied Dublin side Raheny. Niamh lead a strong Salhill Devon contingent on the representative team as team mates Medhb De Burca, Julianne Russell and Emer Flatley also figured in the starting eleven. The Salthill women continue to set high standards with 4 representatives (Julianne Russell, Emer Flatley, Becky Walsh and Lucy Hannon) all included in the Irish Under 17 team that will playa in a tournament in Turkey this week while Niamh and Medhb De Burca will figure in the senior squad to face Romania in Dublin at the end of the month.

    Be the 12th Man!!!

Salthill Devon need to beat Castlebar Celtic by 2 goals in Drom on Saturday at 3pm in the final league game of the season to progress to the knockout stages of this years competition. Hopefully we can get a good VOCAL crowd up to help the lads in what will be a very difficult task.
